This auto fictional process consists of observing my life, extracting content from it, and staging it through artistic creations. In a similar way, I am inspired by the feminist moto the personal is political; and believe that by showcasing my subjectivity I bring forth considerations that can be meaningful for others. I work primarily in live performance and performance for the camera. (However, I have started painting again, after a twenty year hiatus!) In addition to my university education in the visual arts (B.F.A., M.F.A and PhD.), trainings in clown and neo-buffoon have fostered the humorous, vulnerable and satirical aspects of my work. As well, in-depth readings in psychoanalysis and psychology anchor the explorations of my subjectivity. The aesthetic of my performance work is vulnerable, intimate, kitsch, grotesque and abject. Food, saturated colours, humorous characters and rituals are center stage. My use of the camera is exploratory and intimate. I am interested in that which is too close, too personal, too disturbing, too grotesque… or too much period. My paintings also explore this aesthetic, but in a more abstracted way. My current work, Apology Project (letters), reflects on the act of apologizing. I am interested in the remorse and regret that we carry, and how we can find ways to process them. How can apologies act as vehicles for healing and repair? What happens when they are mistuned, misguided or simply miss the mark? An upcoming art installation, as part of the Supercrawl festival in Hamilton, will integrate hand written apology letters and segments of recorded apologies Through French Kiss, I explored on my francophone identity by re-interpreting the fairy tale The Princess and the Frog to talk about assimilation, resistance, disappearance and the construction and deconstruction of identity. Marie-Minou Miaou Miaou parodied French-Canadian stereotypes by staging a clown in humorous situations. Other projects have entailed marrying a masculine doll to deconstruct romantic rituals (Maria Plus One) and repairing holes with pink icing to parody marketing tactics that offer solutions for inexistent problems (Free Sugar). Ma démarche autofictionnelle consiste à scruter ma vie pour en tirer du matériel artistique et le mettre en scène. En lien avec l’autofiction, je suis inspirée par la devise féministe le personnel est politique et crois qu’en mettant en scène ma subjectivité j’aborde des enjeux socio-politiques reflétant la réalité d’autres personnes. J’œuvre principalement en performance directe et pour la caméra, cependant j’ai recommencé à peindre après une pause d’une vingtaine d’années! En plus de ma formation universitaire en arts visuels, (B.F.A., M.F.A., PhD.) j’ai suivi des ateliers de théâtre clown et néo-bouffon qui nourrissent les aspects humoristiques, vulnérables et parodiques de mon travail. De plus, mes lectures en psychanalyses et en psychologies servent de fondement pour l’exploration de ma subjectivité. L’esthétique de mon travail a été qualifiée d’intime, de kitch, de grotesque et d’abject. La nourriture, les couleurs vives, les personnages ludiques et les rituels sinistres y sont à l’avant plan. Mon utilisation de la caméra est exploratoire. Elle se rapproche et s’infiltre comme si elle était une extension du corps, ce qui renforce l’intimité du sujet. Je m’intéresse au trop proche, au trop personnel, au trop dérangeant, au trop grotesque… au trop tout court! Mon travail en peinture partage cet esthétique d’une manière plus abstraite. Mon projet le plus récent Apology Project (letters)explore l’acte de s’excuser. Je suis intéressée par le remords et le regret et comment nous pouvons contribuer à leur transformation. Mon projet interroge comment les excuses peuvent devenir des véhicule de guérison et de réconciliation et aussi comment ils peuvent parfois être déplacés et ne pas fournir pas les résultats désirés. Cette installation intégrera des lettres d’excuses ainsi que des voix proclamant leurs excuses. Avec French Kiss, je me suis intéressée à l’impact psychologique de mon déplacement du Québec vers l’Ontario et j’ai réinterprété le conte La princesse et la grenouille pour parler de l’assimilation, de la résistance à l’assimilation, de l’effacement, de l’autodestruction et de la construction identitaire. Elle détient un Baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Université Concordia, un M.F.A. de l’Université de Guelph et un Doctorat en Études et pratiques des arts de l’UQAM. Pour sa recherche/création doctorale, elle a entrepris une étude auto-ethnographique de l’impact psychologique de son exil volontaire et social du Québec vers l’Ontario dans le but d’en tirer du matériel pour la création d’une performance autofictionnelle. Son travail a été largement exposé au Canada dont à Forest City Gallery, Inter-Access, Mercer Union, Nuit Blanche, Print Studio, Rodman Hall, Galerie Sans Nom, Galerie du Nouvel Ontario, Saw Gallery, Western Front et 7a11d. De plus, elle a présenté ses œuvres au niveau international au festival de performance Castle of Imagination en Pologne, à la Balkans Biennale en Serbie, Reinraum en Allemagne, Pow-Pow Performance Festival aux Étas-Unis et au Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg en France. Elle a reçu le prix Best Emerging Artist aux Untitled Art Awards à Toronto en 2005, le People’s Choice Prize pour Nuit Blanche en 2009 ainsi que des bourses des Conseils des arts de Toronto, du Conseil des arts de l’Ontario et du Conseil des arts du Canada. Elle a travaillé dans divers centres d’artistes et a été une chroniqueuse culturelle pour l’émission Panorama de TFO (2009). Elle a siégé au conseil d’administration pour Nuit Blanche Toronto (2007-2008) et est une des membres fondatrices du Labo, un centre d’arts médiatiques francophones à Toronto.
