Crumbs
This performance for the camera presents the artist gathering bread crumbs and urgently stuffing them in her mouth. The camera close-ups and her awkward body positions enhance the grotesque nature of the gesture. The hunger that is symbolically represented never appears to be satiated as the performer seems more preoccupied with rapidly stuffing her mouth than deriving any nutrition/survival from the food. The artist was inspired by insatiability as well as scarcity and the need to attempt to meet one’s unending needs with ridiculously little. In this work, hunger is depicted as a monstrous and destructive force that brings the artist in a trance-like state in the attempt to satiate it.
